WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| The season was early judging by the opinion of local inhabitants. According to our opinion which agrees with that of local people, the summer was more windy, rainy, and cold, than usial. Local people noted that April and May were in general unusially warm, but a temperature drop occurred in late May. Storms led to flooding of laida habitats by sea water in the first half of both June and July, which led clutch loss by waterfowl and gulls.

Breeding conditions:
| Lemming and vole populations were in depression, but nest depredation was not higher than in previous seasons due to typical for this part of seashore absence of arctic foxes in summer and low numbers of skuas. Breeding success of the most abundant waders (Calidris temminckii, C.alpina, Phalaropus lobatus) was lower than in two previous seasons (judging by brood abundance), probably due to unfavourable weather conditions on hatching and brood-raring.

Summary
of fauna studies: |
| 15 nests of Calidris temminckii, 4 nests of C.alpina and about 20 nests of passerine species (Anthus cervina, A. pratensis, Motacilla alba, Calcarius lapponicus, Acanthis flammea) in the tundra-like habitats in the transitional zone between coastal dunes and laida were monitored according to a standard nest record scheme. 12 individuals of Calidris temminckii were captured on nests and color-ringed to study movements of broods.
